JBI COnNECT Guidance

The Commonwealth of Australia consists of a mainland (which is the world's smallest continent), the island of Tasmania, and numerous other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The population of almost 22 million live in the nation's six states (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania) and two territories (the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory). Australia is a prosperous multi-cultural country and has a well developed health care system.

Evidence based health care is strongly supported and the Australasian Cochrane Centre and a large number of Cochrane groups and supporters are based in Australia. The Australian Government funds a national subscription to the Cochrane Library which makes it accessible to all health professionals and health service consumers.

Currently there are numerous JBI members in Australia and there are 14 Australian JBI Centres and groups:

  1. The New South Wales Centre for Evidence Based Health Care: a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute, The University of Western Sydney, New South Wales
  2. The Australian Centre for Evidence Based Nutrition and Dietetics: a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute, The University of Newcastle, New South Wales
  3. The Western Australian Centre for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery: a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia

All-of State/Territory subscriptions are funded by the Governments of The Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory and Tasmania and most health services (both private and public) in Western Australia and South Australia are members. Membership rates in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland are approximately 50% of the total health systems in those States.

This JBI COnNECT Australia site links members in Australia to the Joanna Briggs Institute Clinical Online Network of Evidence for Care and Therapeutics (JBI COnNECT). JBI COnNECT is a website that provides health professionals with easy access to resources so that they can find and use evidence to inform clinical decision-making. Subscribers to JBI COnNECT can access, appraise and use evidence. The resources contained in JBI COnNECT are targeted at a wide range of health professionals and lay caregivers and are designed to promote evidence informed decision-making. Individual organisations can subscribe to JBI COnNECT and you may do so by clicking here.

However, imagine if the whole population of Australia (that is, every health professional, manager, academic, student AND every patient or consumer of health services) had access to the best available research information to inform his or her decisions and effective tools to monitor and evaluate health practices. As an associate of the Joanna Briggs Institute, whole states and countries can take advantage of the great resources we provide, but many still can't. All of country association to the Joanna Briggs Institute, paid for by Government, ensures that everyone in your country would have access to the best available information.

Over half the world's population already has access to the Cochrane library and there are JBI members in over 90 countries who have access to JBI.

Make your voice heard on this important matter and sign online to show your support for your Federal Government to fund your country as an associate of the Joanna Briggs Institute. - click here to sign the e-petition for the Joanna Briggs Institute All-of-Country Membership - Australia.
